ACCESS Project
Responding to climate change today requires two things:
- Reducing emissions and stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere (what we call climate change). (We call this "mitigation");
- Adapting to the current and projected climate (what we call "adaptation").
To do this, we need a range of tools - policy regulations, economic incentives and technology - but these will only be effective if people understand what climate change is and how to combat it. So we need to change the way people think and act to change the mindset, not the climate, and education is essential to make the radical change needed.
The ACCESS project aims to develop a set of practical tools enabling the embedding of environmental topics, especially the ones related to circular behavior, in the school curriculum. These environmental topics will be provided in a form of micro-learning lessons applicable in all subjects or all levels of elementary education. Apart from this set of direct training tools, in this project also other supporting tools will be developed: (1) training platform containing also an (2) assessment scheme for appropriate evaluation of the knowledge acquired and (3) a guidance material for teachers on how to work with the micro- learning units and micro-credentials suggested for the micro-learning.
The main goal of the project is to create resources which can be used by teachers in order to develop the acquisition of circular behaviors in elementary school students. We kicked off the workshops by discussing our own experience with the topic, brainstorming how to achieve circularity and how different groups in society have different needs and issues when it comes to implementing environmental practices.
